Who uses RHD Jeeps?
We in north America are so much used to driving on the right hand side of the road in left hand driven vehicles that we forget that in various parts of the world, the car still comes with the steering wheel on the right hand side of the vehicle and people there are as comfortable with them as we are with our preferred design. A small percentage of right hand driven cars also find their way on American roads, largely consisting of unique imported masterpieces and the postal fleet in rural areas.
The exquisite vintages or odd right handed sports car are play objects for the rich kids, but the postal service is a department where right-handed vehicles are really utilized. In this era of Internet and email, the local postman might have lost its importance, but the post is still not extinct. A huge part of official communication is still done through the post and it is still an indispensable part of our society. Now if we shift our focus to the rural areas, the postmen and delivery boys face a queer task of shoving mail in every post box. T
hese postboxes are set at random distances from each other, depending on the size of the houses in that area which is a hassle for them. This task, though not rocket science, is difficult because they need to deliver the post in boxes that are on the right hand side of the road, while they themselves sit on the right hand side of their vehicles. There are two options available, either to park the car and get out at every box and do the job, or stretch out of the passenger seat window to put the mail in the boxes. While the former is a very demanding one, effectively reducing their efficiency, the latter is not at all elegant and is impossible to repeat all day.
An easy solution comes in the form of a right hand driven jeep which allows them to pull up to the side of the road, deliver the mail in their respective boxes and drive without having to get out their cars in the whole process. This is a very creative and efficient solution used by almost every postman in large spread out areas today. Specially designed right-handed jeeps with huge storage space in the rear are easily available in the market for postal delivery. There are essentially two varieties, the factory fitted right hand drive ones and the ones with a custom conversion kit installed. Both types are equally reliable and solve the purpose, effectively simplifying the cumbersome task and making postal delivery a much easier job.
Gone are the days when we used to wait for the postman to deliver mail in the mornings, but still they are and essential part of our system. So next time you see a uniformed man driving a right-handed jeep with his backseat dropped down to accommodate large sacks of letters, wave a hand in recognition and acknowledge their job well done
